Delroy’s Cafe and Wine Bar is certainly more than just your neighborhood bar, but it will be my new neighborhood bar. I have walked past this street many times and this past weekend my roommates and I finally went to see what they were offering. About two blocks from the Prospect Park stop (BQ), Delroy’s resides on Fenimore Street off Flatbush Avenue. 65 Fen–the accompanying wine shop–is located right next door. The entrance is somewhat discreet in signage, so were not sure what to expect when we entered.
When we walked in, we were engulfed by the warm, cozy feel of the small wine bar. We were greeted by the welcoming staff. We snagged a table near the bar and more importantly by the heater. It was pouring on Saturday!
There was a pop-up jewelry event this weekend, so Delroy’s graciously served a limited menu as to not outshine the event. Despite, the limited options, we were not disappointed. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which I followed with an order of the Linguine Bolognese. I was a little nervous when Michael told me that the ragu was made with turkey; however, a surprisingly rich and flavorful meat sauce swam between stewed tomatoes and an al dente linguine nest on my plate.
My roommates ordered the Jerk Chicken, which was seasoned beautifully with cumin, jerk seasoning, honey, black pepper, and others not disclosed to us. It didn’t matter because it was a delicious, refined version of the takeout jerk I have come to know.
After our table consumed six glasses of wine ranging from a refreshing Albarino to a hearty Malbec, we were nicely buzzed and craving something sweet. Luckily for us, Vlad of Creative Flavors was selling tasty treats at the jewelry event in the back room. We enjoyed a moist German Chocolate cake, a decadent Red Velvet cake, and a creamy Strawberry Shortcake.
I was also happy to learn that both Delroy’s and 65 Fen are both Brooklyn-based and black-owned businesses. Apparently, the name Delroy’s originated from the late Delroy who used to grill outside the storefront. The community vibes emanating from this establishment swooned us immediately.
BrklynHospitality’s Quick and Dirty: 4/5. The true star here was the service, but it certainly does not hurt that the food was quite appetizing as well. I would love to return to experience the full menu and/or for the amazing-looking waffles served at brunch. Delroy’s has an inviting atmosphere that cannot be rivaled. We will be returning without a doubt.
